The number of civil security cameras in the police database rises to 200,000
The police have added the two hundred thousandth security cameras registered by a private person to his database. The Camera in Beeld initiative of the police, for setting up a database of private cameras, started in 2014.

According to the police , the database can be fuller. The service points out that an estimated one and a half million cameras are hanging in the Netherlands. The police use the database to quickly find out if there are cameras in the vicinity of crimes or other incidents, with possible images that can help with investigations.

According to the police, fear of retribution of persons who appear on images should not be an obstacle to registering cameras. That fear would be unfounded because the police can still demand images that they need for research.

Security.nl points out that the website of Camera in Beeld stated in 2017 : “The police officer will always demand the relevant images with an authorization from the Public Prosecution Service.” However, that sentence has since been changed to: “The police officer will claim the images in question.”
