Servers latest online game on PlayStation 2 closed

Publisher Square Enix has closed the servers for Final Fantasy XI. These are the servers of the PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360 version. The MMOG is still playable through Windows. Final Fantasy XI was the last game that was playable online on the PlayStation 2.

Now Final Fantasy XI is no longer playable on the PlayStation 2, the console, which appeared on the market in 2000, officially offline. The servers all other games that had been previously closed playable online on PS2. Offline games are obviously still playable on the Sony console. The first edition of the PS2 could not be connected directly to the Internet. There was a separate PlayStation 2 Network Adaptor to be able to play online games.

Square Enix was there early. Final Fantasy XI was published in 2002 as one of the first MMOG that was playable on a console. The game was played directly through Windows and PlayStation 2. The Japanese mmog appeared thus three years earlier than World of Warcraft, the game that brought about the breakthrough of the genre. Final Fantasy XI was also the first cross-platform MMOG which was playable and the first MMOG published for the Xbox 360.

Now the servers for PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360 are taken offline, the MMOG is currently only playable on Windows. Who game played on a console, can play on with the same account on Windows, without having to buy the game again. Square Enix has instructions put online to help with the transition.
