Find a Question:
Set a record speed of an artificial object
Researchers at St Andrews University have developed most rapidly rotating object ever created by man. Using a laser beam in vacuum, and it was able to raise force microscopic ball pivot at 600 000 000 rpm – 500 000 times faster than the speed of rotation of the drum washing machine and a thousand times faster drill dental drill.
For the experiment, which is described in the latest issue of the scientific journal Nature Communications, the scientists had created a microscopic ball of calcium carbonate with a diameter of only 4 millionths of a meter.
While many international research aimed at studying the processes that occur at the boundaries of classical and quantum physics, the emphasis is still on the atoms and molecules. Scientists also St Andrews University are trying to better understand the physics of large objects composed of billions of atoms.
This is an amazing experiment that expands the boundaries of our understanding of rotating objects. I am intrigued by the prospect of a whole systems of rotating objects. It is even possible, it will help us to study quantum friction – says study co-author Yoshihiko Arita.
We will explore the fascinating phenomena of thermodynamics, which are often difficult to theoretical modeling. The ball is so high speed that the angular acceleration at the surface of a million times higher than the force of gravity. It is not possible to destroy the centrifugal forces of the ball on – says researcher Michael Mazilu, who also took part in the experiment.
