Smartphones can save rainforests

Rainforests are often called the “second lung of the Earth.” They are responsible for processing 28% of the world’s oxygen and play a vital role in regulating the climate on our planet, providing circulation of oxygen, carbon and water.

Moreover, tropical forests are a valuable source of raw material for medicine and home to two-thirds of all species of animals and plants of the world.

Everyone knows that today the rain forests disappear. And one group of people founded the project, which is going to save the rainforests from its main enemy – man.

One of the obstacles that prevent counteract illegal logging of tropical forests is the lack of effective monitoring solutions. Most of the illegal logging takes place in small groups that are hard to see with the help of satellite communications.

The site Kickstarter project has recently appeared, called Rainforest Connection (RFCx), which aims to protect endangered tropical forests from illegal logging using recycled smartphones.

“Modern detection systems rely on satellites that are too late to react to the destruction of forests. Information comes with a delay from a few days to a couple weeks. Our system yavlyaetmya the world’s first detection system poaching in real time. We can define deforestation since it began, passing this information in real-time, open, and absolutely anyone in the world ”

Team RFCx transforms recycled smartphones autonomous listening devices on solar batteries, which can detect and identify a long distance signs of destruction of the environment, such as work or saw shots.

The developers also offer a mobile application that allows anyone from around the world can listen to the sounds of the rainforest at any time.

“Each device can protect RFCx opredlenii forest area, which is home to more than 1,000 different species of plants and animals. We also focus on building partnerships with indigenous peoples to protect their homeland from poaching. ”

Activists project set device RFCx high in the trees and carefully hide them. Each device continuously records all the surrounding sounds and can recognize the sound of the destructive activities such as logging or chainsaw work within 1 kilometer. Once the device detects sound chainsaw, shot or other violations, it immediately sends an alarm to the cloud server, which in turn sends an SMS message to an emergency response.

The team says that the device will be masked so that poachers will not be able to detect and disable them.

The devices were tested under stringent conditions and developed in such a way as to last forever, using patented configuration of solar panels, which allows you to charge the device, even in the shadow of the tree crowns.

If the team reaches its goal – $ 100,000, then this amount will be purchased enough protection devices 200-300 kilometers of forest in Africa and Brazil. Can I contribute to an unnecessary sacrifice of a smartphone.

“The devices may be assembled in a few hours, set a few minutes, but the collection of all necessary drags on for weeks,” says Topher White (Topher White), founder of Rainforest Connection. “If we get the funding, we will be able to install the system by the end of summer.”

If these two pilot projects are successful, the plans for the future RFCx work with a large area in Latin America and Asia, software upgrades and the creation of data streams in real time
