Smartphones with 4 GB of RAM will be at the end of the year

Back in early May, the company Samsung has officially announced the start of mass production of memory chips such as LPDDR3 density of 4 Gbit standards for 20-nm process. The new chips are faster and use less power than older chips such as LPDDR2, but the amount of memory on a single chip has remained the same – 0.5 GB.

At current production capabilities of the union of four memory chips of this type in the shell thickness of 0.8 millimeter module provides 2 GB of memory.

The company SK Hynix decided to rectify this gross injustice and officially announced the creation of the type of memory chips LPDDR3 density 8 Gbps designed to produce at rates the same 20-nm process. What does it mean? The answer is obvious – the high-end smartphone segment will have 4 GB of RAM instead of the usual 2 GB. According to the manufacturer, the first smartphone with 4 GB of RAM will be at the end of this year.

New 20-nm chips such as the production of LPDDR3 SK Hynix to two times faster than their predecessors and LPDDR2 while consuming 10 percent less power in standby mode.

Data transfer rate of 20-nm chips SK Hynix reaches 2133 Mbit / s. When using a 32-bit memory interface bandwidth of up to 8.5 Gbit / s in single-channel mode and up to 17 Gbit / s – Dual-channel. Power supply voltage is only 1.2 V.

New items will be delivered in cases such as PoP (Package on Package) and eMMC (embedded Multi Media Card). The first prototypes of chips already shipped to customers, and mass production is scheduled for the end of the year.
