Smartphones with four to nine cameras on the back will appear next year

Light technology, the company behind the L16 camera with sixteen lenses, will be available in smartphones from this autumn. Starting next year, models with four to nine cameras will appear at the back of smartphones, the company says.

Which manufacturer makes the smartphone that comes out this fall and has Light technology is unknown. Light says to Business Insider that next year models from more manufacturers should appear. The Huawei P20 Pro is so far the smartphone with the most cameras on the back, namely three.

Light made the L16, a camera with sixteen lenses that Tweakers reviewed a few months ago. That camera uses folded optics, mirrors and algorithms to fuse the images of sixteen different camera modules into a single image with a resolution of effectively 52 megapixels. Thanks to lenses with different focal lengths, the range would match 28mm wide-angle up to and including 150mm telephoto in 35mm equivalent. It is unknown which features smartphones with Light technology would have.

The company will also focus on making camera systems for self-driving cars. The Japanese Softbank therefore invests 121 million dollars in the company. Thanks to the different lenses, the software can see depth, something that comes in handy for self-driving cars. Light has existed for several years and operates from the American city of Palo Alto in Silicon Valley.
