Solar cells created from wood

Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology in collaboration with colleagues from the College of Engineering at Purdue University have created a technology that could provide the basis for the creation of the renewable energy sources – solar panels from trees. Which, incidentally, can be completely split in ordinary water.

Kipplen Bernard, director of the Technological Center of Organic Photonics and Electronics, Georgia explains why this discovery is very important:

“Organic solar cells have to be reworked. Otherwise, we just solve one problem – reduce dependence on fossil fuels – and create another problem – the technology that produces energy from renewable sources, but still end up increasing levels of pollution. ”

Solar elements (or solar cells) have always been the basis of the principles of photosynthesis – the process by which all plants absorb and use the sun’s energy to grow. Therefore, even by artificial solar cells operate on the same basic manner. But more interestingly, these artificial cells convert received 2.7 percent of solar energy into electricity. Unprecedented result for organic material!

No less interesting is also the fact that these organic structures work in concert with nanocrystals of cellulose – biodegradable materials that will wash away the solar cells with warm water at the end of their functional cycle. Renewable energy from renewable resources allows us to call this technology is completely environmentally friendly.

Scientists continue their research, the ultimate goal is to increase efficiency konvertsii to obtain more clean electricity. If all goes according to plan, the production of these elements will have to adjust for the next five years.

Imagine the potential: millions of cheap and recycled solar elements created by environmental and endless material. In case of damage or failure, solar cells can simply be cleaned with water and create new ones. Of course, scientists are going to take precautions when handling elements such as rain. After all, just one little rain, and all your energy system will wash away into sewer. And, in the literal sense.
