Sony announced on Friday that sales of the PlayStation 4 platform exceeded 60 million units as it announced its financial results for the fourth quarter of its fiscal year ending on March 31, 2017.

In 2016, the electronics giant said it shipped more than 20 million units of PlayStation 4, the world’s leading gaming platform, compared to 17.7 million units in 2015.

For comparison, late last year Sony announced that its sales of the PlayStation 4 reached 50 million units by 6 December 2016, driven by strong demand during the end-of-year season.

Sales of the PlayStation 4, launched in November 2013, exceeded 40 million units in May, and earlier in January 2016 the figure was over 35.9 million units.

The 60 million units announced include other PlayStation 4 versions, the slimest version of PlayStation 4 Slim, and the most powerful version of the PlayStation 4 Pro, launched in November.

The sales of the PlayStation 4 with Microsoft’s Xbox One platform, which is the main rival of the platform, can not be compared with the fact that the US company does not announce sales figures for its platform.
