Sony comes with a new, intelligent lamp: the Multifunctional Light. This addition to Sony’s portfolio smart home products can be linked to a smartphone or other device with wifi. The lamp can be set from the paired device.

The Multifunctional Light makes use of Toshiba’s LED technology, which he can produce a full range of light colors. When the lamp is coupled to, for example, a smart phone, it may be set to operate on a timer, and also elsewhere, and be turned on from off.

The Multifunctional Light must live up to its name with its additional features and compatibility with other devices. This Sony seems to want to position the lamp as a central device for a smart home. The lamp has sensors for motion, brightness, temperature and humidity. Also, the lamp place for a memory card, a speaker, a microphone and an infrared remote. This device takes over many aspects of the 2014 cast Amazon Echo.

With these options, the lamp is able to notice when someone walks into the room, and can then eg turn on the TV and air conditioning. He can also serve as an intercom, and store voice messages and play them later. He also can play music and for instance control the thermostat. All these options are set by the application that can be installed on a smartphone.

The lamp comes in the first half of 2016 in Japan for an undisclosed price. When it comes out, Sony has not yet published in the rest of the world.
