Sony has announced a new 22.5-megapixel sensor for smartphones equipped with three-axis electronic image stabilization, integrated into the image signal processor. Also, the hybrid AF system is built directly into the signal processor.

Sony IMX318 The Sony IMX318 is a CMOS chip of the 1 / 2.6 “format, with a diagonal of 6,858mm. The Exmor RS sensor has a stacked design and has 5488×4112 pixels with dimensions of 1×1μm. According to the Sony is the first chip wherein the hybrid autofocus system is built into the internal signal processor of the sensor. hybrid auto focus makes use of phase detection pixels on the sensor, and contrast detection. by all calculations to be carried out directly on the chip would have to go faster than with other sensors. the IMX318 can focus from a distance of 2 meters to 2 inches in 0.03 seconds, provided that at least 2000lux is slightly present. That is equivalent to the amount of light on a cloudy day.

The electronic image stabilization is built into the sensor. The system uses motion data from the gyroscope in the smartphone and can movements correct on three axes: pitch, yaw and roll There are already several smartphones that use digital image stabilization in video using the image processor, but the IMX318, Sony. the digital stabilization integrated into the image signal processor, which forms part of the stacked sensor design. This would require less power than when an external processor takes the stabilization cost. Sony also claims that the system not only corrects movements, but also removes lens distortion. The integrated digital stabilization makes the chip also interesting for other applications that place a lot of vibration. Sony calls use cameras to drones as an example.

Digital image stabilization does not work when taking pictures in full resolution, because neighboring pixels are needed for the calculations. Manufacturers will use the IMX318 sensor in their smartphones would opt however for there to add a lens with optical stabilization.

The sensor supports 4K video at 30fps, 1080p and 720p at 120fps with up to 240fps. Sony also indicates that the IMX318 thirty times per second in its entirety can be read. That makes it possible to make while filming in 4K resolution also pictures with full resolution of 22.5 megapixels.

The Sony IMX318 is the successor to the IMX230; which chip is used inter alia in the Sony Xperia M5 / Z3 +, Moto X Style / Force Meizu Honor Pro 5 and 7. Despite the smaller pixels in the new sensor would not perform worse in low light Sony says. The IMX230 has pixels 1,12μm.

As of May Sony will supply the image sensor, for 2000 yen. Which amounts to slightly less than 16 euros. When smartphones arrive on the market with the IMX318 is not yet known.
