Sony presents smartphones C5 and Ultra M5

Sony has its first smartphone with minimal bezels and presented with 21,5MP camera. Both new Xperia have front camera with a maximum resolution of thirteen megapixels and run on MediaTek processors.

The Xperia M5 is the first smartphone from Sony with a maximum resolution above the 20.7 megapixels of the Xperia Z-series. It probably goes to the previously announced IMX230 sensor from Sony itself, with phase detection autofocus. That is a stacked CMOS sensor with 192 integrated phase detection autofocus points distributed over the surface. The sensor should therefore be well suited to follow moving subjects, such as children or athletes, something that Sony really promotes the M5. In place of a traditional design, the BSI CMOS Exmor RS uses a chip made up of signal processing circuits, with on top a layer having rearwardly-exposed pixels. It is a 1 / 2.4 “sensor with f / 2.2 aperture.

Sony calls the M5 a camera feature called Clear Image Zoom 5x, where the user could zoom the image without sacrificing quality. Presumably this is at a position where the camera standard still images at lower resolution, so the phone can crop the image by utilizing the surplus pixels on the lower resolution. That trick applied to, for example, the Nokia Lumia 1020.

The M5 is also a waterproof and dustproof smartphone with 5 “screen, which features full-HD resolution. The processor is a MediaTek Helio X10, a octacore eight Cortex A53 cores at up to 1.8GHz and PowerVR G6200- GPU.

The Xperia C5 Ultra is the first Sony smartphone with minimal bezels around the screen. The small screen edges sitting around a 6 ”screen. The bezels are a side around 2,45mm, slightly wider than the 2,37mm of the Sharp Aquos Crystal, the device with the smallest bezels until now. The areas at the top and undersides are larger than many other smartphones. In total, about 76 percent of the front is occupied by the screen. The screen has a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels.

The C5 Ultra has a front camera with a maximum resolution of 13 megapixels, a LED flash. The camera on the back also has a resolution of 13 megapixels. The processor is a MediaTek MTK6752, a octacore at 1.7GHz with a Mali-T760 GPU.

Both devices come this summer. Sony has announced that it is not planning C5 Ultra M5 and due for release in the Benelux.
