Sony has delivered fewer smartphones, TVs, cameras and consoles in the last three months of 2018 than in the same period a year earlier. Thanks to good results from the Music business unit, the profit was still higher.

The quarterly figures from Sony show that the deliveries in all product groups are declining. At the business unit where the Xperia smartphones are included, this resulted in a much lower turnover. Sony delivered 1.8 million smartphones in the quarter, a year earlier that was 4 million.

Sony delivered 8.1 million PlayStation 4 consoles in the quarter. That was 9 million a year earlier. Although the number of consoles is declining, Sony gained more revenue from the game division. That may indicate that more PlayStation 4 Pro consoles have been sold, but Sony does not give details. Also revenues from PlayStation Plus subscriptions fall under this division.

The Imaging division of Sony achieved a slightly higher turnover, despite the fact that fewer cameras were delivered. The shift to more expensive models is probably the cause of this. Sony supplied 1.1 million cameras, compared with 1.4 million in the comparable quarter last year. Sony also delivered fewer TVs, 3.8 million compared to 4.2 million a year earlier.

The financial results for the quarter are positive because Sony made much more profit with its Music division. The turnover of this department was slightly lower, but the profit tripled. The quarterly turnover of all business units combined amounted to 2.4 trillion yen, approximately 19 billion euros. Operating income amounted to 377 billion yen in the quarter, 7 percent more than last year and around 3 billion euros.
