Sony will shortly be repairing service for Japanese PlayStation 2 users

Sony has informed Japanese PlayStation 2 users that the repair service of the console will stop. This will end the support of the Sony console released in 2000 after more than 18 years.

In June Sony sent a message to Japanese PlayStation 2 owners, in which a deadline was given for a very last repair option. The users had to submit a form before August 31st and release their console at a PlayStation Clinic center for a final repair before September 7, reports IT Media .

The Sony PlayStation 2 was released in Japan in March 2000. It became a very successful console; Sony only discontinued delivery of the console in Japan at the end of December 2012. In those thirteen years since its release, around 150 million copies of the console have been delivered worldwide. In 2005, 100 million had already been sold. At the moment, the total number of PlayStation 2 consoles delivered exceeds 155 million, making it the best-selling console ever. The current PlayStation 4 has been delivered 82.2 million times .
