Sony Xperia SP test – speed wonders with plenty of battery life

Finally, I am now come the time to review the Sony Xperia SP to customize my current smartphone. Yes, as a geek, nerd or whatever with very high standards, I’ve for the Motorola RAZR i bought a mid-range smartphone, which cost me only 340 Euros. I did not want to spend more, but, enough to have a good camera much performance, good battery life and of course a reasonably compact body. There is plenty of choice in this area is currently not somehow, because most devices are either insanely large, too expensive or can not meet my needs.

The last phone was a Sony Xperia Z , which I had maybe a month and certainly was not completely convinced. The Xperia SP is ultimately slimmed the same device only cheaper and correspondingly, but definitely strong enough equipped.

The design

The design, Sony has put on a mixture of Z and Xperia Xperia S as well but somehow the name suggests. It has the silver power button at the left side of the typical characteristic of the current Xperia devices and, with the transparent glass strip at the bottom still an item of equipment from last year. But different is the integration of the area which carries the antennas and the Notification LED at this time. Now, the frame goes around completely, which fits better in my opinion this module into the overall design and can appear as a nicer overall look. Otherwise, the Xperia SP is now no competitor for a design award, because it is simple.

The back is made of plastic, the frame all around the device is formed from a coated metal. This makes the appearance and also the feel very solid, which was then still contributes to the depth of the device, because the Xperia Total SP is a very thick smartphone. However, since the back is rather round, there is so much good in the hand. The matt back does not attract fingerprints on for support but is not particularly high quality. The battery cover can be removed, but among them you can only change the SIM and memory card, the battery itself is permanently installed. A little highlight on the back is certainly the camera with their framing of metal that simply looks good and somehow something “out of the ordinary.”
Display & Camera

Display and camera are more important today than ever, but are also in the Xperia SP unfortunately mediocre. The resolution is certainly gratifying, because with 1280 x 720 pixels, the 4.6 inch display is very sharp and makes a good impression here. Not so great is the luminosity and the presentation of the colors and everything looks a little pale and lifeless, but not necessarily bad. As with the Xperia Z, the display has unfortunately struggled with the perspective very quickly the display is slightly distorted and gets some kind of clue, if you do not fully frontal looks at the display. Overall, I would still classify the display as well, at least I was in a similar price range already far inferior equipment in hand.

The camera of the Xperia SP is like the display is not the top Pops, even if the 8-megapixel sensor with Exmor RS suggest at first glance something else. Overall, the photos are okay depending on the environment, with the depth of field but not the best overall results and also somehow pale. The camera software is good, however, it reacts quickly and Auto Mode detects at best, self-employed, if you want to just shoot a document, landscape, etc., and will adjust the settings a little automatically. I believe that is pleasing then the camera button which enables a quick start the camera when taking pictures and simply provides a better feel than the touch screen.

To help you get an idea, I like getting a few photos to Google Drive uploaded .

System performance and battery

While display and camera certainly not meet the highest standards, to performance and battery life can lift as plus points to the fore. I probably should not tell that the Snapdragon S4 Pro is incredibly strong as a dual core. Sony has here also the software or adapted so well that the easy part is always fast. It is even more efficient than the great Xperia Z, which does have to do the quad-core version of the S4 Pro, but the graphics unit with the display resolution already enough. The Xperia SP is really getting properly fix and elaborate games like Real Racing 3 can be played easily. It shows again how redundant processors are even greater when the rest just does not fit. With this device, but everything is just right, the Xperia speed SP is a miracle in this price range and does not need to hide behind the upper class.

Much speed but little battery? None, here was my surprise the Xperia SP only really. The battery is with a size of 2.370mAh very large, then also provides the resulting expected running time. While I was with the Huawei Ascend P6 maybe at about 12 – the display than 3 hours left to get 24 hours standby, with the Xperia SP are also five hours there, until the battery juice to thirsty again. On average, I have the device to approximately 24 hours of power and reach an active display of 4 hours. Actually, I’ve never felt that the battery “is already empty” and am therefore very pleased.
Software and special features

As usual, Sony also packs with various extra software on their devices, in my opinion even more features than other manufacturers. But also there are definitely highlights, such as the so-called Stamina mode, which cuts off the data connection standby in the background, so as to save battery. One can always activate or until a certain limit of the battery charge, individual apps can be stored as an exception. Even the battery mode can also automates with any of you set battery level functionalities like Bluetooth, GPS, etc. off. Reflect with various extensions such as Throw, Mirror Link or screen it is easier to transfer the contents of the Xperia SP to other devices or any other devices to connect with the Smartphone for DLNA etc.. Apps for Facebook, Twitter, etc. I personally do not use, because as so often simply do not meet my requirements.

Of course the Xperia SP a few optical adjustments, such as different color schemes of the system, but overall still look good. The home screen is classic, as known also from the original Android, an app-drawer omitted Sony fortunately not. Also here, the operating speed of the system every wish. Can you change the wallpaper next to the Home Screen also the wallpaper for the lockscreen with shortcuts to apps can be there but not deposited, only the camera and the music player can be opened from the lockscreen via quick start.

In the special features, the Xperia SP also definitely not stingy. A highlight is the already mentioned notification LED, which is not only very light through the transparent strip, but also looks good and is also visible from the rear. So it does not matter whether the phone is sometimes on the front or directly in the sunlight, a notification can not be missed. As with Ambilight TV, the notification LED is also the Xperia SP in the photo album or music player in an optical extension that looks cool.

I had already called the Camera button, and further provides the Xperia SP nor NFC, MHL via the integrated microUSB port and LTE on. So you really get a full package that leaves almost nothing to be desired for a good price.

A negative feature is unfortunately the WLAN module, because its transmission power is not a big hit. Where I might still have a satisfactory link quality with other smartphones may be possible that the WLAN for the Xperia SP is already out of reach.

As just been written, the Xperia SP leaves almost nothing to be desired. In this case, you realize the competitive price of the full-featured smartphones in the camera and the display, but both modules are definitely not crazy bad, but just enough. My personal highlights are the particularly cool notification LED and the camera button. Who is already on the way with LTE is also served and NFC capabilities as well as an expandable memory data you do not miss out.

The overall quality quite well made, if not always high-quality looking Sony Xperia SP offers for less than 350 euros a really full and good package that you find so rarely. Wiedermal I am happy to recommend a device.
