Sony Xperia XZ3 Review Welcome innovation

comes with a disadvantage

In summary
The Xperia XZ3 is Sony’s high-end device that came out in the fall of 2018. It is the first Xperia with an OLED screen and it looks beautiful, but our test data shows that it is at the expense of the battery life compared to previous Xperia’s . The camera quality is generally good, but unfortunately still lagging behind the direct competition. With fine stereo speakers, a fairly original and sleek design, and enough high-end features, it’s a phone we can recommend, but it’s not the phone that offers the most for its price.

Nice OLED screen
Smooth operation
Excellent build quality and slimmer housing
Great up-to-date software
Battery life has deteriorated
Camera is lagging behind competition
No quick charger included
3.5mm output is missing
Low fingerprint scanner is getting used to
Sony has a small, but loyal fan base among tweakers and some of them become warm from small phones, in the form of the Compact series. Although Sony releases new high-end phones every six months and often has a Compact version, this was not the case at Sony’s press conference at the IFA 2018 . That was a disappointment for many, especially given the lack of small and powerful alternatives. The iPhone SE is for many people already a bit old to buy now and the Samsung Galaxy A3 is now old. We even had to delete the ‘relatively small smartphones’ category from the smartphone bbg , because there are simply too few. Among others, the Pixel 3 and the iPhone 8 remain as fairly compact options, but it does not stop. Fortunately, there are flipphones and foldable smartphones coming up, so who knows, there is something nice in between.

The Xperia XZ3 was of course introduced at the IFA 2018 and we were quite enthusiastic about it, because it is a fairly complete device, with wireless charging, stereo speakers, water resistance and many other features. The biggest improvement we found is that the Xperia device is the first with a high-contrast OLED screen. We had doubts about the camera, since strangely enough there is no optical stabilization and because it is a single camera. We have now been able to test all that. I have been walking around with the device for some time and even took it back to Japan. Since that is the land of the rising sun, there is of course no better place to test the hdr mode of the camera.
