SoundCloud is 20,000 independent labels pay royalties
Streaming audio site SoundCloud has signed an agreement with an independent publisher of music licensing Merlin. The expansion can face possible financial compensation around 20,000 independent labels and distributors in the future.
SoundCloud calls it a message “a new potential source of income ‘for the independent community. Among the better-known independent labels covered by the deal, are among other Kontor Records, Ninja Tune, PIAS, Domino, Warp Records and the Dutch Armada Music.
As part of the deal, members of Merlin access On Sound Cloud, a content management system with which content can be better managed and, if any income can be generated. Besides On Soundcloud is the service also busy setting up a subscription service that is also part of the deal, which also may be beneficial for Merlin members.
SoundCloud has long been engaged in the search for income through affiliate programs and license agreements. Merlin would represent approximately ten percent of the global digital music market.
