Elon Musk: Elon Musk, the director of SpaceX, has announced that the plan to fly around the moon with the Big Falcon Rocket (BFR) tourists can take place at the earliest in 2023. The Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa is the first paying tourist.

The Japanese, who founded the Japanese fashion brand Zozo, had to pay an undisclosed amount to be allowed to participate. Musk estimates that it costs about $ 5 billion to get the BFR ready. Together with Maezawa eight other passengers will join ; according to Musk, they are artists and people from the cultural sector. The spacecraft of the rocket has a capacity to carry a hundred passengers.

According to the original plan , two heavily paying space tourists had to use a Falcon Heavy rocket somewhere this year, after which they would fly close to the moon in the Crew Dragon capsule. In February, however, the company announced that no manned missions were being carried out with the Falcon Heavy. The Big Falcon Rocket, which is still under development, will be used for the lunar voyage.

The Big Falcon Rocket, which has to be completely reused, is significantly larger than the Falcon 9 or the Falcon Heavy. With a length of about 118 meters, the rocket is almost as long as the famous Saturn V rocket. Some adjustments have been made, such as two fins placed at the nose of the spaceship . The spaceship has seven Raptor engines and three instead of two fins at the bottom. These three fins are necessary because the three landing legs are attached to the fins.

According to Musk, the rocket can take a payload of 100 tons to Mars, provided that the rocket can be refueled in space. The rocket is powered by 31 Raptor engines supplying 5400 tons of thrust. It is the intention that in 2022 two ships will go to Mars and in 2024 astronauts will also fly to the red planet.

SpaceX has not yet brought astronauts into space. This will have to change next year: in November a first unmanned test flight will follow with the Dragon capsule and then, from April 2019, a manned test flight will take place for the first time.
