Steam Controller Review – Valve throws convention overboard

Developer Valve is an entrepreneurial club, who like trying something new. These tryouts pack also suspiciously often good. Who would have imagined that a download platform Steam would be so successful? Who would have thought that a trial like Portal would catch on like this? Now Valve strikes again in another way; is going to produce the hardware. This month appear the first Steam Boxes, though they are still marketed by other manufacturers. Valve however meanwhile also produces hardware. It has its own Steam Controller put on the market, intended to replace the mouse and keyboard.

Steam Controller is its name, because it is meant for playing games that are launched via Steam. The premise is ambitious; all games played through Steam, must be played with the Steam Controller. Luckily got Tiefschwarz, one of our regular visitors, a few weeks before the release for two copies of the controller inside and he was kind enough to lend them out, so we largely had the time to gain experience with the devices.

That does not hurt, because Valve has chosen quite a different design for the controller. So it takes some getting used to deal with the Steam Controller. It is notable especially that Valve has made two circles on the touch-sensitive controller. In return, a joystick killed. The controllers of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, two joysticks; Steam Controller has only one. The right stick is replaced by the round, touch-sensitive surface, labeled by Valve as a trackpad.

The second controller has a trackpad, which will replace the d-pad which is present in the PlayStation and Xbox. The second track pad is touch sensitive. These are the most striking differences, but there are more. For example, the Steam controller has two additional buttons at the bottom: a kind of flippers that you can give a function itself.

There are more differences. The left and right trigger for example, received an extra feature. Attracting the trigger works familiar, but overall impressions it gives a little click, to which an additional function can be linked. This applies to all buttons on the controller. You can in a clear menu very simply attach a function to buttons or trackpads. This should also result in each game to play with the Steam Controller. Because you can for each game together your own configuration. Fortunately, Valve has not only made simple to set their own configuration together, the developer has especially made sure that it’s easy to share it online. So if you start a game, it is easy to download a configuration that was created by other players. So you can experiment with different configurations.

These are points we obviously take a close look at this video. Furthermore, we not only go in the functionality of the controller but also on whether playing with a Steam Controller adds value and if we think there’s a market for it.
