Supervisor: Dutch secret service follows hundreds of people every year

The Dutch secret service follows several hundred people each year. So says the head of the committee that oversees the department. The Dutch entity shall, according to him, not doing ‘NSA-like practices.

It is the first time that someone in the know call a specific number on the amount of people that are the subject of investigation by the Dutch secret service AIVD. To many people research being done is a state secret, but supervisor Bert van Delden of CTIVD calls this “slightly exaggerated”, in a interview with The Press, a news agency for regional media. BN / De Stem also cites a ‘AIVD expert “who thinks the above number is low, but on which he relies is unclear. He estimates that it comes to a total of tens of thousands of people that are the subject of research.

Van Delden says the service will give people who do not follow too much to reassure. No openness “E hand there they want concerned citizens unnecessarily frighten but then they want the attackers do not hesitate to ask too much. A service of people who want to carry something off. Their shield, then it helps if it looks like they can follow everything.”

CTIVD comes with a report on how the secret services work in the Netherlands soon. Van Delden Netherlands there is no large-scale espionage as with the NSA in the United States. Secret services of other countries do, though massive spying on Dutch: as internet or telephone communications is via external routes, the AIVD had no clue.
