Survey: young people who look longer at screens sleep less

Youths often on screens on a particular day, sleep the following night on average shorter. This is evident from large Norwegian study among young people around 18 years. It is unknown if the screen time leads to a shorter sleep, or vice versa.

It would, according to the researchers also young people who sleep less boredom per day to spend more time watching screens of devices. The study was too limited to be able to answer that question. Besides that many young people who watched on screens slept less, they did take longer to fall asleep.

The researchers argue that young people do well for an hour before going to bed to stop watching screens on any electronic device whatsoever. There were visible differences between different devices. Young people who were playing games on their console, got better sleep than those who were with their phone in the back.

There were a total of 9846 youths who were all born in 1993, 1994 and 1995. The researchers from the Norwegian University of Bergen gathered the data in the spring of 2012. There is a major limitation in the study. The young people themselves had to report the use of equipment and the duration of sleep. They also had to fill yourself how much sleep they needed to get equipped. Research based on reports from the respondents themselves known as less reliable than measurements.
