The iPhone 7 which decompose Chipworks, contains a PMB9943 baseband modem with which surface of 66,4mm 2. In addition, two Smarti 5 RF transceivers provided and there is an X-736 PMU-chip for the power of the modem. All chips are part of Intel’s XMM7360 modem platform. In the past, Intel, Apple had been negotiating the use of the Intel Atom SOC iPhone. However, Intel did not have feet to gain ground in the mobile market and compete with its x86 chips with the low-energy arm chips. The chip giant has put its plans for smartphone chips in the refrigerator and is now focusing on other modem chips.
“We held against the light where we spent our R & D on,” says Venkata Renduchintala, vice president at Intel this. “We had a number of mobile socs which I thought they were not worth to develop it.” According Renduchintala does not mean that Intel no mobile platforms will produce more, but whether that also means that Intel yet again socs for smartphones to develop is not clear.

Apple has a list put online to make consumers clearly what the iPhone 7 variants does not support CDMA. The reason Apple modems both Qualcomm and Intel declines is likely that the manufacturer does not want to be dependent on a single supplier.
