Technique uses machine learning to paint in black and white video
A Reddit user did with wholly artificial intelligence to provide a black and white video in color. The method he used is actually intended for coloring black and white photos, and earlier this week presented by a Japanese research team.
The redditor, mar_cnu, the technique let loose on a trailer of a French film from 1964 entitled La 317ème Section or the 317de Division, “a film about a French military division that gets stuck in enemy territory at the end of the First Indochina War.
The applied technique, researchers at Waseda University in Tokyo have developed , can black and white photos realistic way to colorize without human intervention. The team makes use of so-called convolutional neural networks , a machine learning technique inspired by the visual cortex of animals.
Although the technique performs well with photos, they leave much to be desired in the film. Especially filling color close-up causes problems with images rather than get a specific color that still exists in color differences. At overview shots of the jungle works better.
In the pictures, the use of artificial intelligence for coloring not entirely new, but first there was often still need a reference picture to get the right colors or could only certain categories of photos are colored well.
The code for coloring black and white photos can be found on GitHub , so everyone can be fitted with old family photographs of a tan.
