Telefónica receives patents for new home zone, navigation and liquid streams

Patents knows the inclined tech blog readers normally only negative examples, especially Samsung and Apple. In other areas there are patents that do not get as much attention, but for both companies, as well as the customers are very important. Many years may pass between patent application and obtaining the patent. So also in this case.

The oldest dates from now awarded patents in 2006. Telefónica’s called supply communication systems (eg GPS) with low power performance and describes how to:

A communication system, which makes it possible to provide regions of lower power output. A communication unit to operate in a position with two R modules, both in the mobile network and the local standard, and in another wireless communication standard such as WLAN. The communication unit continues to have translation resources to translate signals from the mobile communication standard to another standard and vice versa. Thus, a wireless terminal are in connection with the communication unit, the communication unit receives the signals, converts them and sends it on the mobile network, or vice versa.

It’s probably mainly the communication between two devices via another wireless standard. Say the Navi communicates with the mobile phone, the mobile phone to the wireless network and everything back again. The mobile phone acts as an intelligent modem that information to the appropriate Übetragungsstandard adapts.

In November 2010, the apparatus for controlling data traffic is made. The patent is described as follows:

For the (perceived) quality of the transmission of data streams, such as videos, it is important that they are seamlessly transferred and displayed. This means that transmission time plus processing time in the terminal must be such that no gaps occur in the stream. To ensure this, the run times of data and the processing time required to be measured and the data provided suitably prepared. To the time difference between the sending of the data and the completion of the processing in the terminal is determined.

The device thus determines the required buffer time to deliver a stream independent of the network speed can actually available without interruption. Here, the power of the device for processing the received data is considered.

The Telefónica most interesting patent should relate to the home zone. Why? Behind other providers because we can also offer these home zones and now the technology license. Communication system for providing location-based services with network evolution resistant zone definition was filed in 2007. The patent description:

Development engineer Achim Berger recently received a patent for his idea to extend the technology behind the home zone. The home zone concept is that each device has a spatial region, a zone is established, subject to particular conditions within which collective. This involves a comparison of the identification of the equipment or the participant with the identifiers of the zone assigned to base stations.
Subsequently change the base stations or their identifiers, eg due to changes of the network, it may happen that the home zone is no longer recognized applicable. To avoid this, placeholders are used by the patent within the teaching according to the labels. This eliminates problems assignment, if only the change portions of the identifiers may be used for the holder.

This patent makes the home zone detection for the network operator easier when changing the network, or is removed. Instead of relying on certain fixed parameters, placeholders are used, so that the home zone will also be recognized properly when parts change the parameters.

The customer gets from these patents usually not much to do with the network operators but they are especially important from an economic perspective. Patent disputes are rare among the network operators, that is the big difference to device manufacturers. Royalties flowing anyway, so far the network operators should be quite keen to take as many patents as possible for themselves. Telefonica has 50 patent applications currently running in Germany.
