Telekom mobile network by the end of tap-proof

Telekom will equip the first German network operator its mobile network with improved encryption software A5 / 3. This should be completed by the end of the year after several months of delay. The encryption standard used previously A5 / 1 has been cracked, so that even to hobbyists without much effort can listen to conversations over a distance of 100 meters targeted.


Vodafone also has been using the improved encryption software. However, only in a base station in Berlin’s government district. Vodafone has postponed due to technical problems, the widespread use by 2 years to 2015. Eplus and o2 do not have a timetable for when the improved encryption is to be used. At the Telekom came by 2 older phones to delays. For the approximately 50,000 affected customers an extra software had to be created, so that they can make calls without interference.
