Terrorism Firefighter EU: Internet companies should issue encryption keys
Under certain circumstances, and “in line with the civil rights’ would internet and telecom companies should be forced to hand over their encryption keys. This is suggested by the Counter-Terrorism Coordinator of the European Union.
Keys It seems to care that the terrorism fighter, Gilles de Kerchove, referring to the private encryption keys of users. A number of companies, including WhatsApp, recently introduced stronger encryption, where the encryption between two interlocutors happens and the servers of the service has no access to communication.
“Since the Snowden-disclosures are Internet and telecommunications companies began offering decentralized encryption,” writes De Kerchove in a document published by Statewatch. “That makes interception by governments technically difficult or complicated,” complains the terrorism fighter. The issue of encryption keys would make interception possible again.
The encryption keys where De Kerchove probably referring to, are stored locally on the user’s device; For that to steal, that possibility would have to be built into the app. That would in fact amount to a backdoor, although terrorism fighter that word is not used.
It is unclear under what conditions authorities should have access to the encryption keys, if it were up to De Kerchove. It is not known how wide his view is shared within the summit of the European Union. Earlier, British Prime Minister David Cameron that intelligence should always be able to access communications, though weakness he finish his words later.Viewing:-111
