Tesla has presented Thursday two new cheaper models. These have the same battery as an earlier model on-board software limited. Users can purchase a higher capacity at a later time.

Wired writes that the new S 60 and 60D models have the same 75kWh battery on board as the previous S-75 model. Only the battery software is limited to 60kWh. As a result, Tesla would simply able to bring a new model on the market and customers the possibility to perform an upgrade at a later time. This would not imagine than a software update.

If ota upgrade will cost $ 9000, converted about 8000 euros. According to Wired, this practice is not new, as Tesla also offers the opportunity to engage the autopilot for $ 2500 software, while the hardware is already present in the vehicle. Also in other sectors is this practice called “crippling,” as one researcher tells Wired.

Tesla would be a way to keep the sales models. So customers can initially choose a cheap model and then install upgrades as the need exists. This method applied the company even to the newer version of the Model S that came out in April. This had a 75kWh battery that was limited to exceeding 70 kW.
