The Achilles’ heel of graphene

The Achilles’ heel of graphene

Since the discovery of graphene, most scientists believed the most suitable candidate for the role of a revolutionary in many areas of high technology . Currently, the results of a recent study conducted by a team of scientists from Rice University, said that the material that was believed the strongest, is twice as weak.

Formed by a layer of carbon atoms one atom thick graphene feel incredibly durable. This is due to the strength of the hexagonal lattice structure of graphene. It is engaged in its study at Rice University. The scientists decided to find out what is happening on the border of the graphene sheets. They have found that the edges of the ordered structure of hexagonal cells becomes less than a solid structure of the five-and heptagonal cells in which there are five or seven carbon atoms respectively.

The fact is that the graphene sheets are created in the laboratory, not from a perfect hexagonal lattice structure. They are reminiscent of several interconnected “graphene” islands, which are called “seeds.” It is the connection between the “grains” sin defects.

These kind of joints are the “Achilles’ heel” of the graphene, they are not robust enough and cause a lot of problems.

During the interview, Material Views Boris Yakobson from the team of scientists said,

“Under the influence of cracks occur exactly at the joints. They spread like a crack on the windshield of the car. In metals, the cracks do not propagate, but the count is brittle metal, so the cracks in it can go a long way. ”

What is the result? All created graphene sheets are characterized by the above-described defect indicator of strength they have half the expected value. This, of course, does not mean that all developments related to graphene is to give right now, but recalls that graphene will not solve all the problems in the sectors of high technology .
