The construction of the most powerful laser in the world
Lasers play an important role in modern science , allowing scientists to engage in research processes in chemistry, physics and quantum mechanics. But sometimes the power of modern lasers are not enough for the current needs of researchers. Thus, laboratory Lawrence reported that begins construction of a new laser system, which greatly exceeds the capacity of the power of modern lasers.
As reported, the new system, which was called HAPLS, able to generate pulses of 30 femtoseconds (0.03 trillionth of a second) and a capacity of 1 petawatt (1 000 000 000 000 000 watts). Laser pulse repetition frequency will be 10 Hz, according huffingtonpost.co.uk.
The new laser system uses a light source based on semiconductor diode system and reduce the pulse duration. This system allows to reduce the pulse width twice, thereby increasing its momentary power. The energy density of the laser beam in this case is 10 ² ³ watts per square centimeter.
Dimensions of the new setting will be 4.6 meters in width and 17 meters in length. Additionally, four square meter takes compressor laser pulse.
In the creation of the laser, funded by the European Union, with participation of experts from around the world, including the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (USA) and the Czech Republic. It is expected that the first launch of the laser system will be held in 2017.
