The creators of pedal-powered helicopter Sikorsky received a prize

The Canadian duo and their project, which last year managed to raise the required amount to kraudfandingovom service KickStarter, Sikorsky won the prize of 250 thousand dollars.

Recall that for this purpose it was necessary to create a helicopter , which is driven solely by man and can survive in the air at a height of 3 meters for 60 seconds.

This goal was set in 1980, and since then the history remembers a lot of failures. To achieve this goal, it took more than 30 years.

Huge velovertolet called Atlas was created by Todd Reichert and Cameron Robertson of the University of Toronto, who founded the company AeroVelo.

It should be noted that their nearest competitor – velokvadrakopteru Gamera II – was not enough with just a few centimeters. The device was created by a team from the University of Maryland, he managed to climb to a height of 2.44 meters in the air and hold 65 seconds.

Pedaliruemomu helicopter Atlas, in turn, managed to climb to a height of 3.3 meters in the air and hold 64.11 seconds. On the creation of Atlas took about 18 months. The engineers had the following task: to achieve enough lift by turning the four screws. Weight of Atlas is 55.1 kilograms. Together with the pilot structural weight is 130.1 pounds.

The flight took place on 13 June 2013 year, but only the American Helicopter Society today officially announced the award of engineers well-deserved award.
