The Dutch paid seven bitcoin to criminals

Dutch victims of a scam claiming that images have been recorded via their webcam, have paid a total of seven bitcoins to the criminals behind the campaign. That is what RTL Nieuws claims on the basis of its own research.

This means that the amount that the criminals have won amounts to just over 37,000 euros. RTL Nieuws investigated the different bitcoin addresses mentioned in the Dutch-language e-mails and presented the payments over several weeks. The mail says: “I’ve been watching you for a while because I hacked you through a trojan virus in an advertisement on a porn website.” The sender then requires an amount of one thousand euros in bitcoins. If this is not paid, the sender threatens to send a recorded video to all contacts of the victim.

“I also got access to all your contacts, I made a video showing how you satisfy yourself on the left half of the screen and on the right half you see the video you were watching”, says the e -mail. According to RTL, the e-mail seems to come from the recipient’s address because the criminals use spoofing . This would, for example, result in these e-mails from KPN and Ziggo customers ending up in the inbox. The providers tell RTL to work on measures that can prevent this.

The Dutch Bitonic, which facilitates the sale of bitcoins, says it gets a lot of reactions from people who have received the e-mail. The company says to stop as many transactions as possible to the addresses of the criminals. Despite the warnings from the company, people would sometimes still like to transfer bitcoins because they are convinced that they have been hacked, according to RTL.

A similar scam campaign was previously also reported with English-language e-mails. The Fraud Help Desk already warned earlier this year. In that campaign, the criminals used a password from the recipient in the e-mail to make them look like. That password was most probably again from leaked databases of large services, such as LinkedIn.
