The earth’s crust under the ocean finding life

As long as we have the means and funding, space exploration continues, building new giant telescopes and “space ships travel great theater.” But many wonder, why we strongly climb into space (and, in one galaxy around 100-150 billion stars) as our own Earth and its depth is so little studied? We almost opened the life on Mars – but it turned out that life boils beneath our feet. The oceanic crust hides a huge ecosystem, and recent data confirm the existence of life in its depths.

It all started with a long furiously drilling by the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (Integrated Ocean Drilling Program) on the ship JOIDES Resolution. Originally, the ship was to investigate the oil fields, but later science to get their hands on and applied to the search for life on the sea floor.

Here is the “fine young man”:

Drill dropped into the deep to a depth of 2.5 km and drilled hundreds of meters of sedimentary oceanic crust of the North American west coast. This has helped to discover the “dark biosphere”, a huge ecosystem, which covers 60% of Earth’s surface.

Professor Mark Lever, a microbiologist at the Center geomikrobiologii, is engaged in research on rock samples that come in the drilling process. He found that in the porous basaltic crust of the ocean – where water reacts with iron – are geochemical processes support life, which are nothing like the sun photosynthetic organisms that live on the surface.

“Until now,” – says Dr. Olivier Ruksel of the French Institute INFREMER, – «evidence of life deep in the earth’s crust under the ocean were based on the chemical and textural marks on the stones, but no direct evidence was not.”

Now scientists have found out for sure that there is hidden mass of organisms – a lot of them. Microbial life living, eating minerals. Although basalt 3.5 million years, and the organisms are so small that only chemically produce their presence, laboratory tests have shown that the DNA belongs to the living and still heartily organisms, not fossils. Yes, they are small, but they are legion.

Researchers depths of the sea, and especially the ocean floor, to pay homage. Like the astronauts, they have to work very hard to reach places. Congratulated them on the fact that they had finally found solid evidence of life in the depths of the ocean crust, which has eluded them for a long time.

Lever is optimistic:

“Living in the depths of the oceanic crust is supported energy sources that are fundamentally different from those that sustain life in the muddy layers of the oceans and seas and oceanic water column. Perhaps, like life, is based on chemosynthesis, will be found on other planets, if the chemical environment will allow. ”

Most recently, we wrote about the nine planets located outside our solar system, but not so far away, where the well can be a life . His research Lever continue to expand the horizons of possible living conditions for the most primitive and resistant microorganisms. In addition, recently it was reported that a meteorite that fell in Sri Lanka, contains fossils of algae that grew clearly not on Earth. All this is an indirect confirmation that life can be found not only on our planet. And, soon enough.

To find life on other planets, we need to dig in and own land, or even to study vnutrizemnuyu unearthly life. Well, it is hoped that deep beneath the Earth’s crust, scientists find altogether kakih-nibud Morlocks or the guys from “The Abyss.” There would be fun.
