Electromagnetic interference can disrupt cell phones and degrade the quality of signal reception. But they can be the key to the transformation of traditional LCDs touch screens with gesture control.

A group of researchers from the computer lab at Washington University has developed a method of converting a conventional liquid crystal display (LCD) touch screen method to electromagnetic interference. UTouch technology involves the use of a simple sensor and software. At the heart of this technology is the weak electromagnetic radiation, the source of which is consumer electronics.

“Devices around us are the source of these signals. But people do not attach importance to them, as they perceive as interference, “- said the researcher and co-author Siddhantham Gupta.

The study authors noted that the measured and analyzed the nature of the signals from the LCD displays for presentation to the screen arm. These signals are recorded as electromagnetic interference, and their measurement can be performed with a 5-dollar sensor connected to a home outlet.

The sensor was collecting information on electromagnetic interference and sent it to a connected computer system with special software. The program used a machine learning method for prediction signal that is recognized as noise, or as one of the five established gestures. But uTouch technology has its limitations. With this method, you can not turn an ordinary display into an interactive screen of the iPhone or Android-smartphone.
