The new moon of Pluto was officially named


It is not often get the chance to scientists invent names for new natural satellites detected by orbiting planets within our solar system . Therefore, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) has decided to hold a vote on the selection of the best name for two relatively newly discovered moons of Pluto, which hitherto were called P5 and P4. The main criterion for selection was the requirement that new names were mythological character.

As part of a public vote the rankings the top names took the name “Volcano”: the name of the planet where I came from Spock, Kirk’s first mate of all of the known universe “Star Trek.” Despite the victory, the name was disqualified because it does not have anything to do with our (human) mythology. Instead, it was decided to select the names who came in second and third place respectively.

Thus, two new Moon: P4, discovered in July 2011, and P5, which is found in July 2012, was officially named “Styx” and “Cerberus”. Styx – is a mythological river that separates the world of the living from the dead, and Kerber in turn – a three-headed dog, guardian of the underground of Hades.
