The number of “mobile phone” in the world grows

Interesting information published by Ericsson in their report on the mobile device market. According to data provided by the company, in the 4th quarter 2012 worldwide mobile penetration has reached 89%, while the number of subscriber connections rose to 6.3 billion

In the same period, the number of connections to the networks of the mobile Internet, compared to last year has doubled, reaching 1.5 billion in all regions are experiencing a rapid growth in popularity of smartphones, which accounted for approximately 40% of sales of all mobile phones in 2012. In general, today the share of smartphone users account for approximately 15 – 20% of the total number of connections in the world, demonstrating the growing popularity of smartphones among the world’s population and their prospects.

Meanwhile, the number of connections does not equal the number of subscribers, and in 2013 the penetration rate could easily exceed 100%, which has already been observed in some countries. This is because many users have multiple SIM-cards. On the other hand, in some developing regions often several people use the same SIM-card, having, for example, one phone for the whole family or the whole village.

Ericsson report also showed that during the year 2012, data traffic has almost doubled, and the quarterly growth in the period from Q3 2012 to Q4 2012 was 28%. According to Ericsson, the volume of traffic is very different in different markets, in different regions and for different operators.
