The road to Quantum Computing – A top researcher on the flat land
For decades, quantum mechanics was a theoretical discipline, but for several years we are at a level where we can actually test the theories. Before quantum effects, however, can also be used for scientific research, much remains to be invented in the field of hardware and software. Previously established in the Netherlands two institutes: QuTech, the end of 2013 in Delft, and QuSoft in Amsterdam end of 2015. Tweakers joined by both institutes.
QuSoft focuses on software for quantum computers, such as the development of new protocols, algorithms and applications. We talked with director Harry Buhrman, also head of the research group Algorithms and Complexity of Mathematics and Computer Science and a professor at the University of Amsterdam. “Perhaps the biggest challenge is to combine disciplines such as chemistry, physics, mathematics, computer science and biology in the field of quantum computing,” said Buhrman. “All these disciplines have to collaborate in one way or another.”
In biology, a quantum computer could be useful, for example to mimic cellular processes. Because quantum computing transcends so many disciplines, is a center founded with the name QuSoft, located at the Science Park Amsterdam.
