The U.S. Army has successfully tested a laser battle against mines and drones

The U.S. Army announced the successful testing of effective weapons against armed UAVs . Last week at the site in New Mexico, American soldiers successfully shot down several drones and more than 90 mortar shells range of almost 3 kilometers from the laser turret mounted on a military vehicle, reports the news agency Agence France-Presse, referring to the statement of military officials.

Experimental weapon, called High Energy Laser Mobile Demonstrator (HEL MD), uses three to five lasers to protect remote military bases from artillery shells, mortar and rocket attacks. In recent years, such attacks often occurred in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Although military tested 10-kilowatt laser combat, in the future we plan to use more powerful machines – 50 and 100 kW. According to the company Boeing, speaking the main contractor of the project, a 100-kilowatt lasers fulfill the goal by one-tenth faster than the installation of 10 kW.

After receiving information from the radar, the system instantly directs the laser beam on the target and destroys it on the fly – said Mike Rome, one of the leaders of the program HEL MD.

Officials say that an improved version of laser weapons to shoot down objects allow that move much faster projectile type cruise missile.

The arms race is still going on. Late last year, Germany tested its destructive power of the laser .
