TNO keeps a test with solar cells on guardrail

TNO has started a trial in which a piece of 72-meter guardrail is provided with a flexible solar cell. The organization wants to know if the technology can serve to generate electricity for road lighting and matrix boards.

The solar cells are placed on a piece of barrier at the N194 near Heerhugowaard, writes the TNO . The solar cells are built in a flexible film and tested in a width of 37 and 50 centimeters.

The aim of the research is to test how the set up takes place in different weather conditions and whether the solar cells provide a reliable energy supply. The energy generated must supply road lighting and matrix boards or supply energy to the electricity grid.

Currently only the solar cells themselves are installed. TNO will start this month with the installation of electrical equipment and the pulling of the cables. The research will run for a year and the outcome will be announced by the end of 2019. In the future, the organization also wants to test the technology on a larger scale, along different types of roads.
