Nearly three percent of the world’s population suffers from amblyopia. This disease is also called “lazy eye,” when one eye sees better than the other. The weakening of visual acuity can occur for various reasons. The most popular method of treatment of amblyopia in the early stages of the disease involves closing your eyes healthy for enhancing visual load on the bad seeing eye . This method works well with children, but is not effective in the treatment of amblyopia in adults. Canadian scientists have found a new, more effective way to restore vision.

Researchers from McGill University in Montreal (Canada) stated that the game “Tetris” can help adults to finally get rid of amblyopia. According to them, a puzzle game makes the eyes work together, complementing each other.

“To restore vision in adults who currently have few treatment options have been created the conditions in which the two eyes could perform their task together,” – says Dr. Robert Hess, the author of an article published this week in the scientific journal Current Biology.

Amblyopia is associated with a poor visual information processing by the brain, which leads to the suppression of the functions of the weak eye stronger eye. Directing the falling blocks of various geometric shapes, the patient not only enjoys playing “Tetris”, but also causes the brain equally process images coming from the two eyes.

The study involved two groups of 9 people suffering from amblyopia. While the first group was playing a computer game with taped good eye, the other used the glasses that show the image for each eye separately. In the latter case, one eye on the image output falling objects, and on the other – blocks of paired colored shapes.

After two weeks, the scientists compared their results. As it turned out, the second group showed a significant improvement in the perception of a weak eye images, including three-dimensional. The results of the first group were not as impressive, but the problem was solved when the eye patch replaced the video glasses.

Later this year, the research team plans to use a new technique for the treatment of visual impairment in children.

Last month, scientists at the Italian Institute of Technology in Genoa, announced the formation of the retina of a polymer .
