Jacob Appelbaum, one of the main developers of The Tor Project, has resigned. This could be due to several complaints of sexual harassment in the workplace by Appelbaum. The company has set up an official investigation.

The departure of Appelbaum was last Thursday very brief published by Director Shari Steele. The man has resigned on 25 May. Only last Saturday Steele came up with a detailed explanation for his departure. Rumors about the behavior of Appelbaum’d already longer circulating and have recently been several complaints were made that could not be ignored. After extensive internal consultations Appelbaum resigned.

The Tor Project is among other things responsible for the Tor Browser. Which anonymize Internet by channeling it through multiple relays. In this way, users visit certain websites and handle things without the other parties to find out what a user is doing and where he or she resides. The system seems not waterproof. Tor was used in the past for example the operators of the illegal online marketplace Silk Road, but also by Edward Snowden to leak anonymously certain dates. Appelbaum, one of the leaders of The Tor Project, even served as one of the journalists who published the Snowden documents in 2013.
