Toyota brings talking ‘robot friend “next year on the market in Japan
Toyota will next year bring his Kirobo Mini on the market in Japan. The small humanoid robot is equipped with voice recognition and can communicate in Japanese. It is a smaller version of the Kirobo which sent the manufacturer in 2013 to the International Space Station.
Kirobo Mini Kirobo Mini is about 10cm tall and weighs 183 grams. According to designer Fuminori Katoaka the robot wobbles like it is, like a baby who is not yet able to balance themselves. This ‘vulnerability’ should elicit an emotional connection, writes Reuters, which was present at the presentation. Toyota provides a cradle with which the robot in a cup holder of a car can be placed.
The robot works with a smartphone and an app, but more details on the precise operation have not been disclosed yet. The Japanese product page suggests that the robot can recognize the expression of people and can reconfigure the conversation.
The larger version, a space trip a few years ago made is 34cm long. Toyota sees the little robot for consumers as a stepping stone to more advanced robots that can recognize emotions and to comment. The original Kirobo robot had the same goal.
If Kirobo Mini comes in Japan on the market in 2017, the robot must boyfriend 39,800 yen cost. That is the equivalent of some 350 euros. Also requires a subscription to an app that converted cost about 2.5 euros per month. Toyota shows the little robot to the public at the Ceatec trade show, which takes place from 4th to 7th October. About support for languages other than Japanese and a possible international release is unknown.
