Transatlantic voyage to the clean energy of the sun

solar boat

The world’s largest boat «Tûranor» produced by PlanetSolar, working exclusively on the basis of solar cells, back in 2010 ended its 19-month round-the-world voyage. Now the ship is prepared for the environmental project PlanetSolar DeepWater, part of which is the intersection of the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf Stream study (warm ocean currents).

Curated a 35-meter catamaran Swiss solar-powered, whose name translates from Elf as “The Power of the Sun”, will focus on the University of Geneva. Preparation «Tûranor» for a new mission, which among other things includes installing a completely new system of screws, engaged for six months. During a transatlantic trip from Miami Beach to Bergen, in Norway, the ship will make several stops in New York, Boston, Reykjavik and Iceland.

New equipment installed on board «Tûranor», includes aerosol analyzer Biobox, developed by the University of Geneva, and which will be used to determine the level of the effects of chemicals on climate change and air quality. The ship will also investigate the impact of phytoplankton on the regulation of climate and how ocean current changes under the influence of temperature.

«Tûranor» chosen as a working springboard not only because it is the largest boat that runs on solar power and allow to settle on board a team of scientists, but also because the boat does not produce any emissions that would have prevented scientists to perform their experiments in measurements of atmospheric parameters.
