TU Delft thinks price graphene factor thousand to decrease
Researchers at TU Delft think a way found to fabricate graphene for a price that is a thousand times lower than what is currently the practice. The method works with a copper layer as a catalyst to produce methane from a layer of graphene.
The method to make graphene is described in the thesis of Shou-En Zhu. He will soon receive his PhD at TU Delft and have seen that it is possible to effectively produce graphene with only copper and methane, hydrogen and argon as feedstocks. At a temperature of 1000 degrees, the gas mixture passed over the copper. Subsequently, the buyer causes the hydrogen atoms are ‘stripped’ from the methane, leaving only carbon remains, which then as a single layer on the copper “sticks”.
According to Zhu, the use of this method ensures that a factor of a thousand graphene can be cheaper. For example, a piece of graphene with the size of its conventional production costs 1,000 euros, while Zhu here for only 1 euro needs. The scientist graphene can produce significantly faster than usual now. Tests show that the quality is in order: Zhu synthetic graphene has been deployed in a number of applications, such as a pressure sensor.
