TU / e presents scale model of car driving on formic acid
Eindhoven University of Technology demonstrates a small car that formic acid is used as fuel. The university team let the reaction of formic acid to hydrogen in a car place and wants to have ready a large car in 2017.
The TU / e students team Team FAST presents Thursday a small car, having a length of one meter, which makes use of formic acid or formic acid as a fuel. According to the university is the first step toward a car that combines the benefits of electric cars and hydrogen cars, but does not suffer from significant drawbacks.
Hydrogen can combine with carbon dioxide to liquid formic acid and formic acid after heating the hydrogen is released again. Last year discovered the Eindhoven University of Technology as a catalyst to hydrogen much faster in formic acid can be converted, and back, than existing methods.
Hydrogen itself has the disadvantage that it is a gas with a very low density, so that it must be transported at high pressure in large tanks. The car is in fact makes an electric vehicle with a fuel cell on board via the methane acid electricity from hydrogen and oxygen. Electric cars have large batteries on board and have a limited range, at which hydrogen-powered cars will play less.
