TV manufacturers form an organization to support ecosystem

for 8k TVs
Panel manufacturer AU Optronics and various television manufacturers have set up the 8K Association. This is a non-profit organization designed to promote 8k content, set minimum requirements for 8k TVs and introduce a logo program.

The starting signal for the establishment of the 8K Association was given at the CES fair in Las Vegas. The founders of the organization are AU Optronics, Panasonic, Hisense, TCL and Samsung. Also panel manufacturer Samsung Display is according to the organization in a process to join the association. The manufacturers recently signed a memorandum of understanding with which the 8K Association was established. The list of participating companies lacks a few big names, such as LG, LG Display and Sony. There are also still content creators such as Netflix or Amazon.

The goal of the organization is to support the ecosystem for 8k TVs. The aim is to promote 8k TVs and 8k content for consumers and professionals and to inform them about the 8k ecosystem. Furthermore, the intention is to work on 8k content and that service providers are encouraged to develop 8k content. Technical requirements should also be developed for the 8k input signals, as well as 8k television categories and minimum image quality specifications. For the time being, it is not known which specifications will become part of the logo program for 8k TVs.

The website FlatpanelsdHD reports that Chris Chinnock, the director of the 8K Association, said during a press conference that there are quite a few challenges and that it may take longer to sell 8k TVs than 4k TVs. According to him, this has to do with the fact that large TVs are needed to benefit from 8k. Distributors are still doubtful and there is still little content. Only in Japan is there now relatively a reasonable amount of 8k content; the Japanese public broadcaster launched a channel in December last year that only broadcasts footage in 8k.

Within the framework of the CES grant, several manufacturers have introduced 8k TVs. For example , LG showed 8k-oled TVs with different image formats and Sony showed an 8k TV with a screen diagonal of 98. Samsung already released 8k TVs for consumers last year and recently announced adding a 98 “model to it .
