‘Twitter saves instant messages that have been deleted by users’
Deleted direct messages that are exchanged on Twitter remain in reality on the servers of Twitter, a security researcher discovered. The data also remains for deleted accounts.

The discovery comes from security researcher Karan Saini, who shared his findings with TechCrunch. He discovered that his deleted private messages could still be found on the servers of Twitter, something that came to light when he requested information about his accounts.

A test by TechCrunch subsequently revealed that the deleted data is stored for years on the servers of Twitter. Twitter itself shows in its documentation that with deleted accounts there is only a short period in which the data can still be found. In a reaction, a spokesman for the social network said that the incident was being looked at, but a substantive response was not given.

Users can see for themselves which data Twitter has collected about them by requesting the account details. The data can be requested in the settings.
