Underground microbes run foliage

Very often we ignore things that are not able to see. For example, underground organisms that exist independently of our perception, play a vital role in the ecosystem. These microbes can influence the genetic structure of the plant, its health and a way to interact with other plants. Scientists decided to come to grips with the study of the topic. The research results were published in a series of special edition of the journal American Journal of Botany.

Plants are literally teeming with micro-organisms – they sit in plant cells take up extracellular space and hide in the ground around the root system. Part of the soil, which is in contact with the roots of plants (rhizosphere), contains the most active microbes that affect the molecular and genetic aspects of the plant, as well as affecting the composition of plant communities and soil health.

For a long time, the science of plants ignored the microbiome due to insufficient knowledge of soils. However, new research methods of microorganisms remove the veil of uncertainty, especially with the microbiome – says Marnie Rout of Health Sciences at the University of North Texas.

To demonstrate the breadth of the microbial flora, Roth and his colleagues collected in a single edition of the journal of the various authors.

Microbes (microbial community) acts as a reservoir of plant genetic material. The composition of microbial communities can serve as an indicator of health of the host.

One report says that the root cells desquamation, trapped in the rhizosphere may take protective functions, similar to the work of white blood cells in the body of animals.

Understanding how the microbiome operates the plant, can help to address many pressing global issues such as the use of marginal land and fragile ecosystems to meet the needs of a growing population for food by reducing land degradation and biodiversity due to human impact – says Roth.

In another paper, we propose to use the bacteria that stimulate the growth of plants in areas with dry and harsh climates such as deserts. This can help protect the productivity of agricultural crops from the effects of climate change.

It is important to understand that the microbiome is a composite genome of the plant, it has a big impact on the genetics of plants, their functions, the environment and the community. The interaction between plants and microbial communities is dynamic – the plants can covertly influence the microbiome in order to extract its use (such as defense), while the microbiome can decide whether a plant will survive in a particular habitat or not.
