UPC will activate WiFi module Horizon Mediabox for Wifi Spots
UPC will eventually activate the integrated WiFi module in the Horizon Media boxes to serve as Wifi Spot. Until now, the cable company still uses loose cable modems to offer WiFi spot, but the Horizon Media boxes have an internal modem.
By activating the WiFi module for WiFi Spot function, which UPC customers within the service area of the cable company can free wireless Internet, UPC gets more hotspots in the air. Currently there are more than 500,000 hotspots according to the cable operator active while a small 300,000 customers have purchased a Horizon Media box. It is unclear how many customers use the Horizon Mediabox as cable modem; some subscribers have a loose cable modem for Internet connection.
If the UPC Wifi Spot function on the Horizon Media boxes will activate scale, is not yet clear; UPC spokesman Maaike Scholte says that is currently running test. Well get subscribers who sign up for Wifi Spots and participate in the trial see a notification that UPC will activate this feature on all Horizon Media boxes, notify users on the Chelloo forum. The cable operator can remotely enable this functionality, but customers can if they want to turn this off. If the Wifi Spots function off these customers, however, can no longer log on to the semi-public hotspots.Viewing:-285
