Co-founder and managing director of Valve Gabe Newell, despite the small market share, operating system called Linux future games . Valve is going to achieve this by expanding Steam – digital distribution service of computer games – on a home entertainment system.
The statement was made during a speech at the briefing Newell LinuxCon in New Orleans (USA). Given that the share of Linux on the computer game market is only one percent (Newell himself confirmed it), his words sound too bold, so that they could believe.
To come here and tell you that Linux and open source – it’s the future of gaming might look a little funny. It’s the same thing that come to Rome and the Pope to teach Catholicism – said Newell.
In February this year, the company introduced the Valve Steam for Linux . To date, the platform includes 198 games. Earlier this year, Newell promised to present the long-awaited game console Steam Box running Linux, to compete with traditional gaming consoles. In advance of such an event the company has updated Steam software to work better on TV. Newell even hinted that the console can be presented next week.

For the year, sales of services increased by 76 per cent. This is despite the drop in demand in the PC market.
I think we are in for a major restructuring of the market. The leading five players may leave the PC market. Pretty grim prospect. Free and open to innovation system will have significant advantages over closed and heavily regulated systems – summed Newell.
Moreover, the promotion of Linux is going to invest the company IBM, which wants to convince users to switch to a system of open source – rival Windows.
