Video games improve brain of older people

A new study by researchers of the University of California at San Francisco, under the direction of Professor Adam Gazzaley of Neurology, found that video games improve overall brain function. To be more precise, video games make life easier for older people who suffer from various cognitive disorders.

Describing their findings in the pages of the scientific journal Nature, the scientists say that after interviewing 46 volunteers aged from 60 to 85 years old, was asked to play for four weeks in a specially designed game NeuroRacer scientists, they found that people have increased ability to perform multiple tasks at the same time, when required by the ordinary life situations. In addition, the researchers noted an improvement of cognitive functions such as memory and attention .

The task of the players in the game NeuroRacer was driving a car along a winding road. It would seem that the standard game situation. However, it is complicated by the fact that “drivers” had to simultaneously monitor emergent road signs and press a button in response to the emergence of a certain type of character and at the same time ignore the other. It seems to be nothing unusual here, but the execution of even such basic tasks brain trained volunteers so that even six months after they stopped playing this game, the efficiency of performing multiple tasks at the same time in real life, the volunteers did not decrease.

65-year-old Anne Lindsay, one of the volunteers sharing that before taking part in the experiment, she had problems with concentration and it was easy to draw something. However, the game NeuroRacer helped her solve these problems.

“When you get older, you do several things at the same time it becomes much more difficult. This is me and upset, because I felt that I was losing grip. Now I have learned to focus on a particular problem, “- says Anne.

Scientists say that Anne Lindsay and others began to feel much better after taking part in their experiment, because the game is in fact necessary for the work gave them attention and memory exercises.

Interestingly, the game itself NeuroRacer was not directly aimed at the improvement of cognitive function, scientists are divided.

«NeuroRacer does not require a person to have any specific skills or experience. However, multi-tasking, which is present in it, in itself gives the necessary impetus to the work of the entire cognitive system and at the same time increases the effectiveness of each of its functions “- said Adam Gazzaley.
