Virgin Orbit launches LauncherOne rockets with Boeing 747 from the UK

Virgin Orbit has announced that it intends to launch missile launches from British Cornwall in 2021. The company does this with the help of a modified Boeing 747, which carries a LauncherOne rocket under its wing.

Vrigin claims that the spaceport of Cornwall is the first place in the world in which space flights and commercial passenger flights take place next to each other. The launch with the 747, also called Cosmic Girl, takes place by first bringing the plane to cruise altitude and then launching the LauncherOne two-stage rocket that is mounted under the left wing. Earlier this month , Vrigin Orbit received permission from the US aviation authority to launch its first satellite from the US in this way.

The announcement of Virgin Orbit coincides with the announcement of the UK Space Agency that in 2020 vertical launches of rockets must take place from the Scottish Sutherland. At the same time, the British space agency announced that investments would also take place in space ports from which horizontal launches can take place. The location in Cornwall is one of them.
